Human rights education as a tool for change
- To train teachers in human rights education (also in intercultural education and citizenship education); to understand the purpose and objectives of this method as well as the tools available.
- To allow teachers to discover the means and methods for integrating human rights education activities within the regular curriculum, rather than having to establish separate sessions.
- To allow teachers to consider particular situations in the classroom where human rights education can be used as a tool for preventing and managing phenomena such as racism, antisemitism, xenophobia, religious intolerance and discrimination or hate speech.
The teacher leading this activity should:
- Deliver a presentation on human rights, followed by an interactive plenary discussion;
- Deliver a presentation on human rights education, followed by an interactive plenary discussion.
The sessions are a means of educating teachers about the significance of human rights, and the use of human rights education as a tool for promoting tolerance and preventing radicalisations.
- A teacher or a group of teachers.
- A presentation on the subject of human rights to establish the general theoretical framework (attached).
- A presentation explaining the purpose, objectives and tools of human rights education (attached).
No prior knowledge of human rights is necessary so as to enhance usability and impact.
Participants engage in an open evaluative discussion about their learning experience in terms of knowledge, skills and the attitudes acquired.
Participants list three key learning outcomes of the training and compare notes to a colleague so as to facilitate evaluation and reflection.
At a later stage, teachers can coordinate subsequent follow-up trainings based on, for example, particular human rights education handbooks (list available on the Aequitas website).
