How to observe relationships at risk in order to prevent radicalisation
- To recognize and identify early situations of possible radicalisation that may grow into conflict.
- To raise awareness about the issue of radicalisation and its various forms.
- To define indicators for identifying potentially conflicting situations in the classroom.
- To learn ways of using these indicators in a learning context.
- To encourage active and participatory observation skills in teachers, for urgent warning-sign cases.
Participants organise the space to facilitate comparison (chairs in a circle, a table for each working group, availability of multimedia aids). This kind of organisation is particularly important to encourage a welcoming atmosphere fostering open and spontaneous dialogue.
The proposed activities are planned to last approximately 4-8 hours, and are conducted by the facilitator in order to solicit confrontation and debate between participants and to encourage their active participation.
It starts with a short training session where the common terminology and a presentation of the issues are introduced. Special attention is placed on the definition and meaning of the terms radicalisation, prevention, and vulnerable identity.
After being divided into sub-groups, participants are asked to create indicators that represent "warning signs" in the classroom context with respect to situations of conflict that may generate forms of radicalisation.
The results of group work are to be presented in a plenary session where contributions from each group are collected and organised with the help of the facilitator,
The results will be accompanied by an analysis and presentation of the pre-defined set of indicators (document attached), in order to define the most significant indicators for the group.
- A facilitator.
- A set of predefined indicators to initiate reflection and debate (see attachment).
- A space for working in sub-divided groups.
- Access to computers.
After four months, participants are invited to a meeting to evaluate the indicators' effectiveness, their concrete use, and any proposals for improvement. Participants are also required to detect benefits in terms of both teaching and interacting with the group.
This tool revision activity can then be proposed and used at the end of each training year.
The leader/manager/headmaster of the educational institution shall indicate whether and to what extent minor conflicts have been reported, by using the following indicators:
- Fewer acts of verbal and physical violence;
- Reduction of disciplinary sanctions.
